Claire’s is one of the nation’s largest accessories retailers, occupying significant physical retail locations as well as operating a popular online storefront. However, recent reports have revealed that the retail giant’s website was compromised, allowing hackers to gain access to secure customer data that included credit card details.
It is reported that Claire’s data breach occurred between at least April 30 and June 13 of 2020, at the height of the U.S. Coronavirus pandemic when most of Claire’s retail locations were closed and the company was primarily conducting business online. Hackers used a compromise called a MageCart attack, which allegedly allowed them to insert malicious JavaScript code into sections of Claire’s website. The scripts then remained on the website, allowing hackers to steal customers’ credit cards while Claire’s remained oblivious to the attack.
Security experts have advised any customer who made purchases on Claire’s website between the dates of April 30 and June 13 to contact their credit card companies and monitor their statements for fraudulent purchases.
An arms race of sorts between hackers and cybersecurity officers has always existed, but at a time when a majority of Americans depended upon Internet retailers in order to safely shop during a global pandemic, failing to ensure the security of online purchases is a negligent violation of their duty and a betrayal of customer trust.
